What is MLA anyway?
MLA stands for Modern Language Association. This citation style requires a set of guidelines that authors must follow, including how to format papers and cite sources. MLA Formatting of Papers: -Double-spaced text -1 inch margins -4 line heading (includes name, professor/teacher, class name/number, date (e.g. 23 January 2016) -Header in rightmost corner (includes last name and page number) -Centered title -In-text (parenthetical citations) -Work(s) Cited page Citing Sources With a Paper: Each time a source is directly quoted, summarized, or paraphrased the author must include a proper signal phrase (introducing a source) and in-text citation (e.g. page number). ***I would add that each source should be followed by a sentence of analysis that explains, interprets, expands upon, etc. the source. This sentence should tell the audience why the source was used and how it supports the paper. Work(s) Cited: -Centered "Work(s) Cited" title -Double-spaced text -1 in margins -Alphabetical order of citations -Hanging indent applied to all entries -Adherence to MLA 8 (newest version) (as demonstrated with template below) |
My 12th graders came up with a great list of strong verbs to use in their signal phrases!
